Spend Crypto With a Debit Card: How It Works

You can spend crypto with a debit card at almost any shop, even though very few shops accept crypto directly. The card does the conversion for you, so the shop simply receives a normal payment. With Cashi, you can hold your money in digital dollars while your local currency moves, and pay with a crypto card anywhere Visa is accepted. This guide explains how the conversion works, how to pay, where cards are accepted and what it costs.
How Spending Crypto With a Card Works (Conversion Flow)
A crypto debit card is a payment card that spends from your digital-asset balance instead of a bank account. Here’s what happens in the second after you tap or click Pay:
- The shop sends a normal card request through Visa.
- Your card app checks your balance.
- It converts the amount you need and approves the payment.
- The shop receives regular currency.
You never need to ask a cashier for a wallet address, and the shop doesn’t need to know anything about digital assets.
Why Digital Dollars Work Best for Spending
USDT (Tether) and USDC (USD Coin) are digital dollars designed to hold a steady value of one US dollar each. That makes them much easier to budget with than BTC (Bitcoin) or ETH (Ethereum), whose prices can move a lot between the day you add funds and the day you pay. Many people keep their everyday spending money in digital dollars for exactly that reason.
Card or Direct Payment?
Some merchants accept digital assets directly at checkout. That means matching the exact asset and network, and a payment that’s been sent can’t be canceled like a card payment. A card turns the same balance into an ordinary Visa payment, and refunds go back to your card like any other purchase.
How to Pay With a Crypto Card (Top Up, Pay, Check)
Top Up
Add a supported asset on a supported network and wait until it shows as available. If you hold more than one asset, set your spending order once so the card knows which balance to use first. In Cashi, that’s in Settings > Asset spending order.
Pay
Online, enter the card number, expiry date and CVV (card verification value). In store, add the card to Google Pay and tap your phone at any contactless terminal.
Check
Look at the amount, currency and status in the app. A pending amount can differ slightly from the final charge, especially with tips or hotel deposits.
Where Crypto Cards Are Accepted
If you’re wondering who accepts crypto as payment, the honest answer is that only some online stores, travel sites and local businesses accept it directly. That list is short, and it changes often.
A crypto card avoids the problem. It works wherever its card network is accepted, which for Visa means most online stores, apps and contactless terminals worldwide. In practice, you can pay with crypto almost anywhere you’d use a normal card. Cashi’s Help Center explains where you can use your Cashi card.
A few places still need care. Some hotels and car rental desks want a physical card for deposits, so keep a second payment option for important bookings. If your balance is in USDT and a merchant asks for a direct transfer, see how to pay with USDT.
Fees, FX and Spending Limits
- Card fees: some crypto cards charge an issuing or monthly fee. The Cashi card is free.
- FX (foreign exchange): a conversion fee applies when a merchant charges in another currency. If a checkout offers to convert the price for you, paying in the local currency is usually cheaper, since merchant conversion often adds a markup.
- Limits: check your daily limit before a large purchase. In Cashi, you can freeze your card and set your own daily limit in the app.
With Cashi, US dollar payments have no Cashi fee and other currencies carry a 1% conversion fee. Eligible purchases also earn 3-2-1 cashback: 3% on selected monthly subscriptions, 2% on online shopping and 1% on flights and hotels.
